Art 1
Art 1 is a graded course where students are evaluated on work habits, creativity, and overall effort. This 12 week course will have students explore many different mediums, and go in depth with control and skill building strategies with these materials. Students will have the opportunity to find areas of art that are interesting to them, and also try other materials that they may have little experience.
The students’ responsibilities are as follows:
  • Be on time for class. If it is a work day, students can start getting their materials. Check with the teacher before you start your projects (Always check the board).
  • Turn in work on time, labeling it with your name, date, and title of work (late work will have points deducted).
  • Be aware of constructive criticism. There will be some group evaluations, and it is up to YOU to use your ideas to help the artist, not hurt them.
  • Always do your best. I will not tolerate art that is poor quality. It is up to YOU to put all of your effort into these projects. Points will be deducted for sloppy work.
  • Sketchbooks should also be used for project sketches. A good artist ALWAYS plans before they create! Your sketches will be part of your final grade, and it is wise to remember to label your sketch with the date and project title.
  • There is a research power point presentation due during the last week of this 12 week trimester. You will have the information needed to start this assignment the first week of class, and it is up to YOU to do your research outside of class! A power point demonstration will be held in class if necessary. This is a part of your final grade!
  • Art is fun, and have a good time with it! It is okay to have meaningful conversations while you are working on your projects, but NOT when the teacher is giving instructions, background, and demonstrations! Disrespectful behavior will be handled in JR High/High School standards. In other words, just because you are in art, does NOT give you the right to act out!

You will be working in many different mediums. Each project will run about 5-7 class periods (work times may be adjusted according to the teachers observation). Students will participate in a self-evaluation of their work, a class evaluation (where noted), and a final evaluation from the teacher.
Your projects will be as follows (But not necessarily in this order):

1. Create your sketchbook: You can go with a basic stapled book, or you can get more creative with your steps! All Sketchbooks will need to have a creative cover using a variety of materials! Binding Ideas: Basic stapled book, stitched, ribbon, duct tape, glue, rings, etc. Cover ideas: Different types of paper, collage, drawing, oil pastels, painted (use a thicker paper), etc. All ideas will be graded on creativity, balance, neatness, and overall effort.

Still life with pencil Students will practice values and shades. The students will be drawing their still life with pencil. Materials: pencil.stillife.jpg
  1. Landscape with oil pastels : The student will be given knowledge of the idea of surrealism, with background of Escher, Dali, and Magritte. The students will be asked to use these techniques of surrealism and create a fantasy landscape using pencil and oil pastels. Materials: Pencil, oil pastels.surrealscapes.jpg
  2. Collage Art (Google Images: collage, collage art): The students will put together a collage representing something important in their lives. The students can use magazines, pictures, drawings, and other found objects. Materials: Magazines, etc. Presentation and group critique.collage.JPG
  3. Photo Extension (physical examples, Google Images: Photo extension): The students will learn brief background about black and white photography. The students will choose a photo out of a magazine, cut it and extend at least 60% of the photo. The students will try and match these shades and values as closely as they can.photoextension.jpg
  4. Paper Mache sculpture : The students will receive background on contemporary art sculpture. The students will be creating a free form paper Mache sculpture using wire, plaster strips, and acrylic paint.
  5. Choice painting (Google ideas for paintings): The students will go over the color wheel and the idea of tints and shades in colors. The students will be able to pick any subject and create a choice painting. The students may use pictures, magazines, etc. Materials: Acrylic paint, canvas board.DCP_3588.JPG
  6. Linoleum prints: The students will learn about bas relief carving, and the understanding of how the positive and negative effect can occur in carving and making prints. The student will receive a 4 by 6 piece of linoleum. The students will think of an interesting design or subject and use carving tools to create it in their linoleum. The student will be required to print their linoleum print on at least 3 different surfaces. The students will be encouraged to be creative and to not use the same old paper!   7. Clay food replica: The topic of realism and pop art in sculpture will be covered. The students will talk about modeling their favorite types of foods in clay. The students will be asked to create their favorite meal in clay. Acrylic paint will be used after firing. These will be presented in group critique. Materials: Clay, clay tools, acrylic
  8. Tessellations: The students will discuss how a tessellation is a geometrical art form. The students will see some great tessellation work done by Escher. The students will be asked to create a pattern that is not a common geometrical shape. It has to repeat and not overlap. The students can put these on 12x18 white paper, and finish these with black marker and colored pencils or markers.

Research Project: Presentation about a great Artist!

You will choose one great artist. This great artist can be well-known, obscure, or local! You will do research on your own time about this artist, and present the last week of the trimester! Your power point needs to include the following:
  • Title Page with the name of the artist and your name.
  • Name, birth, death (if deceased), place of birth.
  • Family background.
  • Artistic background.
  • Examples of his/her artwork.
  • Fun facts/ interesting things about this artist.
  • Why did you choose this artist?
  • Is this artist inspiring to your art?
  • Resources

This presentation needs to be At LEAST 8 slides long, and have all the information above to receive credit. More points will go to persons that make the presentation more interesting.

You will need to sign up for your artist that you wish to research. There will only be ONE person per artist, and it is first come, first serve.
You will receive this information the first week of class, and you will have until the last week of the trimester to complete it! Do not say it was not brought to your attention!
