Art 2
Art 2 is a graded course where students are evaluated on work habits, creativity, and overall effort. This 12 week course will have students explore many different mediums, and go in depth with control and skill building strategies with these materials. Students will have the opportunity to find areas of art that are interesting to them, and also try other materials that they may have little experience.
The students’ responsibilities are as follows:
  • Be on time for class. If it is a work day, students can start getting their materials. Check with the teacher before you start your projects (Always check the board).
  • Turn in work on time, labeling it with your name, date, and title of work (late work will have points deducted).
  • Be aware of constructive criticism. There will be some group evaluations, and it is up to YOU to use your ideas to help the artist, not hurt them.
  • Always do your best. I will not tolerate art that is poor quality. It is up to YOU to put all of your effort into these projects. Points will be deducted for sloppy work.
  • Sketchbooks should also be used for project sketches. A good artist ALWAYS plans before they create! Your sketches will be part of your final grade, and it is wise to remember to label your sketch with the date and project title.
  • There is a research power point presentation due during the last week of this 12 week trimester. You will have the information needed to start this assignment the first week of class, and it is up to YOU to do your research outside of class! A power point demonstration will be held in class if necessary. This is a part of your final grade!
  • Art is fun, and have a good time with it! It is okay to have meaningful conversations while you are working on your projects, but NOT when the teacher is giving instructions, background, and demonstrations! Disrespectful behavior will be handled in JR High/High School standards. In other words, just because you are in art, does NOT give you the right to act out!
You will be working in many different mediums. Each project will run about 5-7 class periods (work times may be adjusted according to the teachers observation). Students will participate in a self-evaluation of their work, a class evaluation (where noted), and a final evaluation from the teacher.
Your projects will be as follows:
  • Self portrait collage: Create yourself using magazines, newspapers, etc. Think about skin tones, features, and also pictures that say something about your personality (Class evaluation).self portrait collage.jpg
  • Charcoal still life: Draw the still life using charcoal and white chalk. You will be working on your values and shading, while learning to control a difficult medium.charcoal.jpg
  • Drywall carving: Create a relief carving using drywall. Think of an interesting idea and carve it into your drywall. Paint it to make it more interesting.carving.jpeg
  • Choice drawing: Choose a subject and draw it anyway you would like using proper shading and values. Pick one area of interest, and using a razor, cut it out and put colored paper behind it. cool drawing.jpg
  • Texture Study: Find as many textures as you can around your house, school, work, etc. Create a project of either abstract shapes, realistic shapes, etc. Cut out your textures and add them into your project to create a textured collage like picture. Use the concept of layering and shading to make it more interesting!texture-collage.jpg
  • Papermaking: Using a molding by pressing or casting by pressing, and create your own paper sculpture. Paint and mount onto a background or frame (Class evaluation).paper.JPG

  • Mobiles: Kinetic sculpture: Think about 4-6 shapes or images that are related. Recreate them out of found materials. Paint, color, or create them in your own personal way. Hang them in a mobile style using balance and rhythm.mobile.jpeg

  • Ceramics: Build a vessel (any clay subject that can hold something, such as a box, vase, etc) using slab, coil, pinch, pressing, etc. The class will watch the demonstration video and check some websites before they start!   • Mosaics: Choose a design. Using paper of some sort (tissue, newspaper, construction, etc), create a mosaic using the mosaic layout technique.

Abstract Sculpture: Choose an abstract or geometric design. This project should not be easily recognizable. Create a base using wire, mat board, newspaper, tape, etc. Plaster and paint. Must be free standing or attached to a base.

  • Choice Painting: Paint whatever you want using proper tints, shades, and values! Make sure your subject is interesting!painting.jpeg
  • Photo extension: Choice: Use a black and white or color picture and extend it. The black and white has to be abstract!

  1. Linoleum prints: The students will learn about bas relief carving, and the understanding of how the positive and negative effect can occur in carving and making prints. The student will receive a 4 by 6 piece of linoleum. The students will think of an interesting design or subject and use carving tools to create it in their linoleum. The student will be required to print their linoleum print on at least 3 different surfaces. The students will be encouraged to be creative and to not use the same old paper! Materials: Linoleum, carving tools, acrylic paint, multi-surfaces for printing.
  2. Tessellations: The students will discuss how a tessellation is a geometrical art form. The students will see some great tessellation work done by Escher. The students will be asked to create a pattern that is not a common geometrical shape. It has to repeat and not overlap. The students can finish these with black marker and colored pencils or markers.




Research Project: Power Point Presentation about a great Art movement!


You will choose one great art movement (Renaissance, Fresco, Impressionism, expressionism, surrealism, Pop, Cubism, abstract, modernism, etc). This can be something you have always been interested in, or something you have never heard of! You will be doing research in your free class/ homework time, and present the last day of the trimester! Your power point needs to include the following:
  • Title Page with the Art movement and your name.
  • Explanation of this art movement.
  • What are the dates and countries this art movement started.
  • 2 artists (birth and death as well) that were an influence in this movement.
  • Examples of their artwork
  • Fun Facts/ Ways to make people more interested in this art movement.
  • Why did you choose this art movement?
  • Resources

This presentation needs to be At LEAST 8 slides long, and have all the information above to receive credit. More points will go to persons that make the presentation more interesting. A print out of your power point will also be needed for full points.

You will receive this information the first week of class, and you will have until the last week of the trimester to complete it! Do not say it was not brought to your attention!
